The problem

This project aims to tackle the escalating challenge of disinformation and misinformation in Mongolia, phenomena that have proliferated with the advent of digital media and the internet. Disinformation, defined as false information deliberately spread to deceive, and misinformation, incorrect or misleading information shared without malicious intent, both pose significant threats to society. These issues are acute worldwide, where rapid digitalization has outpaced the development of media literacy and critical information evaluation skills among the general population.

The impact of disinformation and misinformation is multifaceted and profound. Firstly, it undermines public trust in media and institutions, eroding the foundation of democratic discourse and governance. As citizens become increasingly skeptical of information sources, the societal consensus necessary for democratic decision-making and public policy support becomes harder to achieve. Secondly, the spread of false information can have direct consequences on public health, safety, and security. For example, during health crises, misinformation regarding treatments or preventive measures can lead to widespread harm and exacerbate the crisis. Thirdly, misinformation and disinformation can inflame social and political tensions, manipulating public opinion and fostering division within communities.

Recognizing these challenges, the project’s goal is to develop a user-friendly platform powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect disinformation and misinformation in Mongolia. By leveraging AI, the tool aims to provide real-time analysis and verification of information, empowering users to discern the credibility of content they encounter. By developing a platform that combines advanced AI detection capabilities with a focus on user-friendly design, the initiative aims to enhance information literacy, protect public discourse, and contribute to the resilience of Mongolian society against the challenges posed by false information.

The project goals

The primary aim of this project is to combat the spread of disinformation and misinformation in Mongolia by creating an AI-powered detection platform within a specified timeline. The project will unfold in several carefully planned stages:

  • Designing UI Wireframes: Special attention will be given to designing UI wireframes that prioritize user experience, particularly targeting non-technical users. This phase is crucial for ensuring the tool is accessible and user-friendly, encouraging widespread adoption among the general populace.
  • Developing the Front End: Based on the confirmed wireframes, the front-end development will proceed, translating design concepts into a functional and engaging user interface. This development phase is key to bringing the project’s vision to life, ensuring the platform is intuitive and effective for users.
  • Back-End Development Coordination: While the front-end is being developed, continuous coordination with the back-end development team will ensure that the AI functionalities are seamlessly integrated into the user interface. This collaboration is essential for creating a cohesive and efficient platform that accurately detects disinformation and misinformation.
  • Integration and Testing: The final stages will involve integrating the front-end with the AI-driven back-end, followed by comprehensive testing to ensure the platform’s functionality and accuracy. This phase is critical for identifying and addressing any issues before the public launch.
  • By following this structured approach, the project aims to deliver a Minimum Viable Product that demonstrates the effectiveness of the AI-powered detection platform and sets the stage for future enhancements. This initiative is poised to make a significant impact on the information landscape in Mongolia, empowering users to navigate digital content with confidence and promoting a more informed and truthful public discourse.
