Precision Millet Farming: Leveraging Geospatial Technology to Optimize Crop Selection and Yield

This Omdena Local Chapter Challenge runs for 4 weeks and is a unique experience to try and grow your skills in a collaborative and safe environment with a diverse mix of people from all over the world.
You will work on solving a local problem, initiated by Kutch, India Chapter.
The problem
Millet, a nutritious and sustainable crop, has numerous benefits; however, both consumers and farmers often lack awareness of its advantages. This lack of knowledge results in limited market demand and production of millet. The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM2023), providing an opportunity to raise awareness about millet’s importance. To fully capitalize on this opportunity, it is essential to address the knowledge and resource gaps that prevent farmers from growing millet and boost market demand for millet-based products.
To tackle this problem, we aim to leverage advanced technology and innovative solutions to support farmers in growing millets and bridge the gaps in the market. It is essential to increase consumer awareness regarding millet’s nutritional and environmental advantages, which will, in turn, help generate demand for products derived from millet. By doing so, we can help to promote sustainable agriculture, improve food security, and contribute to a healthier planet.
The goals
The goals of the project are:
- Develop a machine-learning algorithm to suggest the best millet crop for cultivation in farmers’ agricultural fields.
- Take into account various environmental factors, such as soil moisture, temperature, and precipitation, using satellite imagery and geospatial technology.
- Provide farmers with data-driven insights to help them make informed decisions about crop selection.
- Optimize yields and promote sustainable agriculture practices by leveraging advanced technology.
