Developing an AI-driven chatbot that delivers real-time, crucial information and guidance to individuals in disaster-stricken areas, enhancing their ability to respond effectively and access vital resources. In this 8-week challenge with Omdena and DataCamp, you will join a collaborative team of 50 AI engineers from all around the world. All selected participants will gain access to a free 1-year Premium DataCamp Donates Scholarship.

The problem

In response to the catastrophic earthquakes that devastated Türkiye and Syria on February 6, 2023, the imperative for innovative and effective disaster management strategies has been sharply brought into focus. The extensive destruction and profound loss of life have exposed a significant gap in our existing disaster response capabilities. This crisis demands a transformative approach to disaster assistance and emergency relief, emphasizing the need for technology-driven solutions tailored to the specific challenges of each affected region.

Our initiative pivots towards a technology-first strategy, with the primary objective of developing a chatbot designed to assist individuals in disaster-affected areas. This chatbot is envisioned to provide real-time, accurate information and guidance, including FAQs, safety tips, and directions to the nearest relief centers, with a particular focus on a specific city or area. This approach aims to address the critical challenge faced in disaster scenarios: the dissemination of timely and accurate information to those in need.

In the wake of such disasters, traditional communication channels often become overwhelmed, leaving affected individuals without access to essential information for safety and relief. Our project in collaboration with DataCamp seeks to fill this gap by creating a proof of concept (POC) application. This chatbot will serve as an easily accessible, real-time information source, enhancing the ability of individuals in disaster-stricken areas to make informed decisions and access necessary resources.

The overarching goal is to develop a chatbot prototype within an 8-week timeframe that can efficiently process and relay disaster-related information for a designated city or area. This initiative is not just about reconstructing the physical environment but also about fostering resilience and hope in the aftermath of such tragedies. By leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI), we aim to create proactive and adaptive solutions that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of disaster response mechanisms.

Our mission extends beyond the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, focusing on long-term recovery and rebuilding processes. We are committed to integrating AI into these efforts, aiming to rebuild smarter and more resilient structures that are better equipped to withstand future disasters. This project calls for a diverse team of AI experts, data scientists, and disaster management professionals to collaborate on developing these innovative AI solutions for disaster assistance and emergency relief.

Ultimately, our goal is to set a new benchmark in disaster response and recovery, driven by technological innovation, efficiency, and a profound sense of humanity. We are dedicated to enhancing the safety and well-being of affected individuals and communities, leveraging the power of AI to improve the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of disaster response efforts, and ensuring better outcomes for affected communities.

The project goals

The ultimate objective of this project is to create an AI-powered chatbot that provides real-time information and guidance to individuals in disaster-affected areas. This chatbot aims to improve access to crucial information such as FAQs, safety tips, and the locations of nearest relief centers, focusing on a specific city or area. The project seeks to enhance the ability of affected individuals to make informed decisions and access necessary resources during times of crisis, thereby improving disaster response and relief efforts.

The main goals of this Omdena-DataCamp Challenge are:

  • Development of Chatbot Features:
    • Create chatbot functionalities for FAQs, safety tips, and guidance to relief centers.
    • Focus on a specific city or area for the proof of concept.
  • Technology Integration and Model Selection:
    • Utilize ChatGPT or similar models for natural language processing and human-like responses.
    • Implement real-time data processing capabilities.
  • Data Source Integration:
    • Leverage APIs from government and local disaster management authorities for real-time updates and alerts.
    • Ensure quick data processing and relay capabilities.
  • User Interface Design:
    • Design a basic, user-friendly interface for the chatbot demonstration.
  • Customization Using Advanced Techniques:
    • Employ vector database and prompt engineering (Retrieval Augmented Generation) for chatbot customization.
