This Omdena Local Chapter Challenge runs for 6 weeks and is a unique experience to try and grow your skills in a collaborative and safe environment with a diverse mix of people from all over the world.

You will work on solving a local problem, initiated by Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania Chapter.

The problem

Lack of access to mental health services and resources for individuals in Tanzania. This problem has significant consequences for the mental health and well-being of people in our local community, as well as for their families and communities.

In Tanzania, like many other low-income countries, mental health services are often limited, inaccessible, or stigmatized. This can prevent individuals who are struggling with mental health challenges from seeking the care and support they need to manage their symptoms and improve their well-being.

By developing a chatbot-based solution that leverages AI and natural language processing, we hope to create a scalable and accessible support system that can help individuals in Tanzania manage their mental health challenges and improve their well-being. By providing personalized support and resources through a chatbot that can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. By doing so, we believe we can make a meaningful impact on the mental health and well-being of individuals in our local community, and help to reduce the social and economic costs of mental health challenges in Tanzania.

The goals

  • Develop a chatbot prototype that leverages AI and natural language processing to provide personalized support and resources for individuals struggling with mental health challenges in Tanzania.
  • Evaluate the impact of the chatbot on user outcomes, including changes in mental health symptoms, quality of life, and access to care.
  • Identify opportunities for scaling the chatbot-based solution to other communities and populations in Tanzania, and develop a plan for scaling the solution sustainably.
  • Develop a training program for mental health professionals and community health workers on how to use the chatbot to support their clients.
