Building a chatbot to help with the general mental well-being of the Australian community


The Background

COVID-19 had a big impact on the mental health of people all around the world. In Australia, mental health issues have escalated. Some statistics from the government are here.

The volume of mental health-related PBS prescriptions dispensed spiked in March 2020 when COVID-19 restrictions were first introduced, followed by a dip in April 2020.”

Now, with the lifting of the restrictions, we need to reassess the mental health space and normalize the conversations around this topic.


The Problem

The objective is to scope out a better way to create habits for general well-being.


The Project Goals

1. Scope out mental health issues in Canberra

2. Talk to mental health experts and find out 3 key steps to maintaining general well-being

3. Build a prototype chatbot/web app to help people maintain a routine for general well-being

4. Test that prototype for user-experience

5. Vet the chatbot through proper channels

Adish Ashraff

Adish is a Computer Science Engineer (B.E.) with experience in AI, Data engineering, and Full Stack Software product development & technology consulting for large enterprises to start-ups in several industries in multiple geographies. He is keen on solving environmental, social, and humanitarian problems using continuous innovation and collaboration and has been involved in AI & Data Science community initiatives since 2018. He is looking forward to growing the community & bring about a positive impact to local communities.

Tanya Dixit

Tanya Dixit is a Machine Learning Engineer. She has a bachelor’s in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and a Master’s in Machine Learning and Computer Vision. She has extensive research experience in deep learning, convex optimisation, and computer vision.

Ankit Gupta

Ankit is located in Edmonton, Alberta and is working as a Senior Business Insights Analyst at TD Bank. He has a master’s and bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta and the Indian Institute of Technology, India. He has a year of experience in data science where he worked on a variety of machine learning and data analysis projects. He extensively used python, SQL, Pandas, NumPy, PySpark, Plotly, Sci-kit learn, TensorFlow, Keras in his projects. He believes that ML and AI have brought a unique opportunity to everyone interested in solving legacy problems in a better way. It is a time to leverage the power of data to solve complex problems.
