Connecting Land Conflicts with Policies for Land Restoration

The Problem

Land degradation affects 3.2 billion people and costs the global economy about 10% of gross product each year. While dozens of countries have committed to restore 350 million hectares of degraded land, land disputes are a major barrier to effective implementation. Without streamlined access to land use rights, landowners are not able to implement sustainable land use practices. The problem’s scale requires a scalable solution. In India, where 21 million hectares of land have been committed to restoration, land conflicts affect more than 3 million people each year.

The challenge goal

The challenge goal is to create a solution that bridges policy and practice to identify land conflict events and connect them with their jurisdictional policies. This will provide communities, journalists, and governments with immediate access to information to resolve land disputes. The challenge will involve the following tasks:

• Classifying land conflict events based on available metadata
• Unsupervised ranking of policy documents and statements by their relevance to conflict events

The datasets

• News media articles mentioning land tenure and land driven conflict
• Forced displacement data
• Human verified land conflict events
• National, subnational, and local level environmental policy documents in English

Requirements:
  • Good English and access to a computer with internet
