Bhutan, also known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is a small country located in the eastern Himalayas, bordered by India to the south and China to the north. The country is known for its rich biodiversity, pristine natural landscapes, and commitment to environmental conservation. Bhutan has set an ambitious goal of maintaining at least 60% forest cover at all times, making it one of the few carbon-negative countries in the world.
Despite its strong environmental policies and conservation efforts, Bhutan faces the challenge of forest fires, particularly during the dry season, which usually runs from November to April. Forest fires in Bhutan are caused by various factors, including natural causes such as lightning strikes, human activities like burning of agricultural waste, and unintentional fires from activities such as cooking or smoking. These fires have a significant impact on the environment, wildlife, and human settlements, with some fires resulting in extensive damage and loss of life.
The use of AI technology in forest fire detection and early warning systems has been gaining momentum globally. AI-powered forest fire detection systems use various sensors such as cameras, satellites, and drones to detect fires in real-time, allowing for early response and timely action. These systems have proven to be efficient, cost-effective, and accurate in detecting fires, minimizing the impact of forest fires on the environment and local communities.
The proposed automated forest fire detection and early warning system in Bhutan using AI technology aims to address the existing gaps in the forest fire management system. The system will leverage AI technology to detect fires in real-time and provide timely alerts to relevant authorities for prompt action. The proposed system will be designed to be cost-effective and efficient, reducing the number of forest fires in Bhutan and minimizing their impact on the environment and local communities.
Forest fires are a serious threat to the environment, biodiversity, and livelihoods of people worldwide, and Bhutan is no exception. Every year, forest fires in Bhutan cause significant damage to natural resources, wildlife, and human settlements/life. Traditional forest fire detection methods, such as visual patrols (by anyone), are often ineffective due to the rugged terrain and large forested areas. The delay in detecting and responding to forest fires can lead to the rapid spread and uncontrollable wildfires, which can result in significant environmental and economic losses. The existing forest fire management system in Bhutan relies heavily on human resources and lacks the necessary technological support to prevent and manage forest fires effectively. Therefore, there is a need to develop an automated forest fire detection and early warning system that leverages AI technology to detect fires in real time and provide timely alerts to the relevant authorities for prompt action. The proposed system aims to provide a cost-effective and efficient solution to reduce the number of forest fires in Bhutan and mitigate their impact on the environment and local communities.
